If Something Embarrassing Happens, DON'T Draw Attention
This didn't happen to me but rather a co-worker who was working cashier up at the front. The woman was trying to pay for two pillows, a purchase that amounted to about $10 total. When she went to swipe her credit card, it was rejected. An embarrassing and horrifying situation to be sure but this lady had to make it worse by getting mad and yelling at the cashier, insisting that there must've been a mistake on our end, as if my coworker was somehow responsible for her irresponsibility. This just drew more attention towards her as everyone in the other lines glanced over to see what was happening. My coworker apologized for not being able to do anything (it's not like we can magically make your bad credit go away). In a display of errant stupidity that, unfortunately, is all too common at Derp-Mart, the customer demanded to see the manager. So the manager was summoned to the scene, informed the customer that unless she had an alternative way of paying for the pillows then she wouldn't be allowed to purchase them. Well, you would've assumed that the manager had just ask the woman to fork over her four first borns to Derp-Mart because she stormed out of the store, vowing to never shop here again. Well, can't shop without money so we really didn't lose anything here.
